1 gig vs 512 MB VRAM

I'm considering upgrading my Desktop rig which has a Radeon HD 5770 Video Card with 512 MB RAM.I'm wondering if upgrading to 1 GB of VRAM with the same card will make a difference in FPS or any other graphics intensive tasks.

Basically, how do you determine if X amount of memory for Y card is worth it or not? That's the question I'm posing.

Let's say you put an HD 4670, a 4850, and my 5770 against each other, and benchmark their 512 and 1024 MB versions, will there be any difference between the six except for the differences between models?

i am pretty sure you will only see a difference at extreme resolutions were the game is limited by ram. at lower resolutions there is no difference. here is a good benchmark comparing the 4870's 512 mb, 1 gb, and 2 gb versions.

If you already have the card, it's definitely not worth upgrading just for the extra memory. If you want more performance, just get a better card altogether. As above poster said, it will only be of any use at *extreme* resolutions, none of which the cards you listed would be capable of anyways, unless crossfired.

Umm... Where is a good benchmark?

The HD4670 performs better with 512m of vram since the gpu is not powerful enough to utilize it well. The HD4850 would benefit from more VRam as well as higher end cards...

Thank you all for your responses...will extra VRAM make a difference with F@H?

Also, based on the responses I bought another HD 5770 and crossfire'd the two cards, much better performance now, truth be told.To be honest my old 5770 ran everything pretty well, but oh okay.I like to have some future proofing.

how did the crossfire affect fps? i am thinking about crossfiring 2 hd 5770's as well. what games have you played before and after and what was the difference?

Best to my knowledge, no, memory has next to no bearing to the performance in F@H or any other similar applications like GPU-accelerated encoding, other distributed computing thingies, and so on.

Well I tried Crysis Warhead to see how it went and almost a 1.5 fold rise in FPS, from what I measured with FRAPS ( 24 vs 35 , 2AA 1920x1200 ) , other than that there was better FPS all around like CoH went definitely better. Can't say more about other titles.

Mm, okay.

that isn't too bad. do you remember what the fps were?

No, but definitely high, no glitches or anything like that.I didn't play too much though. The only game which I still play professionally is WC3 Dota.Yeah, go figure.Even after so many years that game rules.I love that.
