All three of my machines have the same public IP address. Can someone explain to me how this is possible? How is my internet working? This just doesn't make any sense to me. I must be missing something.

For ISP ( Internet Service Provider) Provides you with an IP.

That ip gose stright to your Router and dilivers internet to it.

The your router is conected to your 3 PCs.

Those 3 PCs each get a LOCAL IP ... Usaly in the form of 192.168.0.2 all the way to 192.168.0.256 .... Unless if you chage the defult setings.

So your router provides your PCs with a internet conection.

Basicaly your fine ....

You might have a Modem inbuilt into your router tho buts its the same thing..

I hope this helps :D

The router does that if it is DHCP enabled. If not, your ISP will tewll what ip to set. Think of this way. Whatever is connected to your router creates a small network, just like Internet, but much much smaller. You can assign ips to your machines manually or let a router do it.

Everything the guys above said is right, but I think a simpler way to put it would be to say that the public IP is the IP that your ISP gives your for your particular internet connection. Every machine that uses that internet connection uses that public IP.

the router assigns IP like for the linksys Router it like this 192.168.1.X
where x can be configured from the router control panel and you can also use static IP by going to the Properties of your connection and assigning IP in the range defined. You can set you ips like 192.168.1.2 192.168.1.3
so that will help you to access you one computer with another one using remote desktop or just file sharing without the pain of running ipconfig or zamzom
