10,000 rpm hdds?

How fast are 10,000 rpm hdds as compared to 72,000 rpm ones? I know that ssds are probably faster but I noticed that an 80gb 10,000 hdd is only $26 so I wanted to know if they are worth buying...

Depends on what you want. Certainly they're cheaper and can hold much more than SSDs. OTH as you mentioned SSDs are much faster. I'm shooting for the best of both worlds, an SSD and a HDD.

Yeah you can tell the difference. You can get a 250gb VelociRaptor for like 100 bucks. Cheaper sometimes on sale.

Seagate already makes them. It has 4GB solid state memory. Used a few, like them pretty well. Thinking about getting another one for mine. Would take it over the VelociRaptor above and its twice the size.

You can't tell the difference really. At least not like you can between an HDD and an SDD.

Okay, so basically a 10,000 rpm hdd will work faster than a 72,000 one but the difference will be almost not noticeable. On the other hand you are recommending me hybrid-hard-drives, right? which are supposed to work noticeably faster than 72,000 rpm hdds but still slower than ssds. Did I get it?

If your looking for a big improvement, get an SSD.

A SSD drive cannot be compared to any Hard drive because it has no moving parts, access time is virtually instant vs a standard hard drive which can take 15-25ms.

From people i know who have owned 10,000rpm drives...they did notice a slight improvement but nothing super...and they're known to be quite loud!

I agree with a Hybrid drive if you want lots of storage.

I think I'll just stick with my 7,200 rpm hdd cause windows 8 boot up in 6 seconds on it and I don't need it to be any faster, but this brings me to another question... When I was installing windows I left 120gb of unpartitioned space on my hdd for linux and now I want to format it so I can use it in windows cause I decided to get a different hdd for linux, So, how can I do that w/o messing up my windows files? (I'm guessing I can do that with some program)
