I have no idea what to do....

I have not used this laptop in quite some time, but I thought that my wife would be able to use it.... Well, I started windows updating(witch takes about 40 minutes to do).... After I restart it, it goes thru the configuration stages.... Once it gets to 100% it shuts down and restarts itself. Then the updates dont take effect its like an never ending cycle....

If anybody has some advice I would appreciate it.... I am learning about computers right now, so please help

windows updating? are you installing windows or installing windows updates. I know you said updating but it kind of sounds like your installing.

what OS are we talking about too. (i made the assumption it was windows, if it is let me know which version)

its running vista.... 32bit... its a hp 6820s if that matters

its says that its updating but it also says that it is installing things as well.... like i said i havent used it for like 6-8 months

oh i get ya try running windows updates manually and see if that makes a difference. its in the start menu.

At the moment then, you can't use the PC because it's still running in the loop? You may have to try a repair install by booting off the Vista CD. There are a number of guides on the Internet.

Until you can get it sorted out, you should go to manual updates as Quiltface suggested. Go to the Windows Security Center and disable Automatic Updates. You may get warning messages about not being safe but ignore. If you then manually initiate updates, choose Custom and select only the important updates, not the optional. Once the updates seem to work OK you can return to Automatic Updates if you wish.
