1000 mbs

im noobish to internet connections and all , but i know that 10/100 means 10 mbs or 100 mbs. My router is 10/100 and so is my network card, meaning i run at 100 mbs. my question is, if i got a netork card that supported 1000 mbs and got a router that did the same, would my internet run 10 times faster, or would my standerd optimum online connection have to be amped, and cost more
