108GB taken up???

Ok well my friend bought a Maxtor 250GB refurbished hard drive. He installed XP and then went to look at how much space was being taken up. It says 108GB are taken up!! He scanned for errors and did a defrag but no luck. Is there a way to fix this besides the fact that it's refurbished?

I think you have to install SP1 in order to get XP to see beyond the limit which the retail XP version has. That or he got a 120Gb HDD.

It's your XP install. Get him to install upto service pack 2

Him, is it partitioned? Go Start>>Control Panel>>administative tools>>COmputer Managment>>Disk Managment. Do you see any thing besides one hdd and however many cd drives you have? And do you see any unallocated space?
