120mm on a 7900gt

I'm planning on volt modding my evga 7900gt co to 1.4v (like the gtx). Would it be wise to just add a 120mm fan blowing onto the graphics card (onto the heatsink and fan) or would it be worth it to actually remove the heatsink and fan?
PS: I really don't want to remove the heatsink and fan (too much work)
 
Depends. I am do not know what the stock V are. If you dont want to remove the old HS and fan, i would think that adding a 120MM fan would be adequate. I would only recommend bumping up the voltage by .1 or so. Just be sure to check your running temps, if they get too high, then you might have to geta new HS for it.
 
I'd just suggest one of the Arctic Silencer models. They would cool your card very well.
 
The only thing I'm worried about is if the fan on the graphics card would be stressed because of the extra air flow going to it from the 120mm. Is this an issue?
 
that wont be a problem for the card... but as motorxrdude said that small increments on the card are wise to keep an eye on temps... i would consider stressing the card for 30 minutes between each change to get a good idea of the maximum temperature the card is likely to attain.
i would most definately consider getting a nice after market cooler that cools both the GPU and the RAM to keep everything cool and to maximise your overclock

Idk, theres only so much air can do.... You will need a better HS if you plan to oV, or OC

it doesn't matter if you have a fan blowing right at it, if the heatsink doesn't cover it then its gonna heat up. And make sure the 120mm fan isn't blowing opposite way of the heatsink fan, as that would be bad.
