128MB vs. 256MB

Would it be better to buy a newer video card with 128MB of VRAM or an older one with 256MB of VRAM?

Can you give us examples of what you're looking at? Generally speaking, a newer card with 128 mb will perform better than an older card with 256 mb. VRAM is not the be-all-end-all of video card performance, the other specs are usually more important (unless it's something like 4 mb of VRAM :P).

Probably the 128 if you must... The RAM really doesn't make a huge difference, espcially with older cards. What really helps is the actual processor on the card.

Now, this all can also depend on how "old" of a card you're talking about. I mean is this back to like the Geforce 4 days, or something like an FX5200?

It'd be nice to have the 256mb card, since games like Far Cry and Doom 3 can easily fill up a 256mb card on the higher settings.

True, but with an older GPU you're not going to be playing games like Far Cry and Doom III on highest settings to begin with ;).
