$1500 dream computer

Hey, I turn 18 tomorrow, along with $30,000 settlement, so I figured, why not make a kickass computer? I hear that making computers yourself is much cheaper than buying them, but I am not quite sure about that. So if I was to make a computer, what should my budget be, and what components should I buy? I want a computer that can play Half Life 2 at good fps, and can handle garrys mod for making levels and all that. And should I buy my parts via tigerdirect, newegg, or elsewhere? I am sorry if this is a stupid question, and I know I have some knowledge on computers, but im 100% sure you know a little bit more than me :D .

EDIT- I plan to upgrade the computer even further this november/december, and will I need a special mobo to use dual vpu?
 
newegg is good and if you dont want to build it yourself, ibuypower.com is good but their shipping is astronomical
 
Are you asking what you should set your budget at or is it set at 1500? i would try to get 2000. get conroe, nice nvidia GPU, Whatever case you think is cool. Just go on newegg and have fun with it.

Intel's new line of processors that will be realeased in around a week, that have around a %20 increase in performance then the current processors and will not be all that pricey either
 
My computer was under $1200. You could always build something similar to it and purchase an LCD. Or, you could wait a while, possibly get some more money saved up, then just get the newest processors(say a Conroe)
 
Get, basically, the same set up as in my sig, but change it to use the AMD AM2 socket. so, new CPU, RAM and motherboard. you don't need to get the raptor or such an expensive case.

yes, conroe woop's AMD's ass, but from what i've heard, conroe is going to be in REALLY short supply for some time, with dell taking all the batches.
