160kb/s = ? mbps?

I just want to know how many mbps I'm getting. I'm paying for a 7mbps package, but I know I'm not getting 7mbps because 7mbps = around 875 kb/s a friend said. My ISP is qwest, which is probably the problem, but I'm not sure.

The closest server is Sioux Falls, SD. I live South of MPLS/ST Paul. (about 15min south) but here are my results.

Thats not very good. Have you tried resetting your modem/router? Usually that fixes any speed issues. Have you called your provider to have them do a line test?

I'm aware most plans say "not available in all areas" but I have a friend who lives a block or so away and gets 20.0mbps speeds. I guess I should call the ISP.

Yeah that is definitely not right. I live 20 minutes south of the Twin Cities (Hastings to be exact) and have the 1.5Mb plan through Qwest. My speed test came back at 1.48/second download and .48/second upload.

You're getting your rated speed then.

1.5mb is 1.5mbps. that's 1536kbps. divide that by 8 and there is your theoritical maximum download speed in KB/s

Never had any good luck with Qwest DSL. I used to also work in the Des Moines, IA office and you'd be surprised how many people call in because of the speed variations. Granted this was three-four years ago and a lot in technology has changed, but overall we had a higher call volume for DSL discrepancies than we did about the actual phone service.

Yup that's what I'm saying. I have the same provider in the same area (within about 20 miles at the most it sounds like) and I am getting what I pay for. He, on the other hand, is not.
