184-pin motherboard

I have a 184-pin MSI-KT3 Ultra motherboard. Been searching for some cheap RAM online and only seem to find them up to 400mhz. I'm guessing this is the maximum amount of mhz for 184-pin RAMs. I also saw some 240-pin RAM that runs @ 800mhz and I was wondering if these type of RAM will have compatibility with my motherboard. Thanks for the help.

You can't use DDR2 (240pin) RAM with your motherboard. Your board can use up to PC2700 (DDR333) but if you put DDR400 in it should downclock so you can use it.

To really see the full use out of DDR400 memory you would need a board that supports the Atholon XP3200. From the 3000+ down the fsb is lower.

They made a XP 3000 that run on a 400 MHZ FSB too. It had a X of 10.5 and ran a 2.1 GHZ instead of 2.167 GHZ like the 333 MHZ one did.

The 3200+ also ran with the 10.5x setting for the multiplier by default. The differences there were between the two different cores Barton or Thorton. The Bartons has the 512kb L2 cache over the Thorton's 256kb.
