1gb stick or 2 512mb sticks

The 2x512MB would be faster, as it would run in dual channel. However, if you are planning on upgrading to 2GB soon, it would be better to get a 1GB stick now and add another later then have 4x512MB.

A 1gb stick imo is better.
We're not looking for opinions here :P Depending on your computer, one or two sticks may be better. If you're motherboard supports duel channel, you want two sticks. If you're board does not support duel channel, then running two sticks slows your timming down. This is a much lower performace decrease than running single channel, but some people argue it's notciable.

depends on the configuration.

dual channel = 2x512

whether the mobo has 2 or 4 slots

i would seperate the two sticks whether or not they are dual channel or not so there is enough space for heat to escape.

Simply thinking of the concept of quantity, quality, or price takes an account here. If you plan to continue expanding, buy the 1GB. Otherwise, buy the two 512MB and save urself about thirty or so bucks.

Remember, in any situation, you can only attain two of the concepts.
1GB = Quality + Quantity(later expansion)
512MB = Quality + Price(cheaper)
In both cases, quality should be about the same.
