Doesn't matter if it's an i7 PSU. It says its compatible with i7 not 'made for' i7 so it will work just fine.

price mainly. and I didn't want to have to go search for a new mother board and I don't like the whole 3 memory sticks not 2. thanks for the help. although that PSU is an i7 one.

My pleasure Dragonguy.

OK. Just curious. The LGA1156 boards and chips are only dual channel rigs. The higher end i7 board (socket 1366) are the tripple channel setups.

That PSU will work for the Q9550 just fine. The "i7 Compatible" moniker is just marketing.

If your interested, this would be similar in price for a P55 setup: (Actually a bit cheaper than it would be for core 2 quad)

Memory:

Mobo:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131604

CPU:

Or if you wanted to spend the extra on a 1366 setup:

or

CPU: (If you have a microcenter close, i7 920's are $199)

Not sure if your interested, for for the price of that GTX275 you can pickup a 4890 that will be nearly identical in performance(if not faster in alot of areas) for around $70 less:

Thanks, I really appreciate the help. But I really would rather just stick with my core 2 quad. I'm a computer n00b I really don't know much about them. I don't under stand what Zatharus is talking about chips and channels it's all new to me. What I really need help with is if all that stuff is compatible and if I need any more components.

I also wanted a PSU that had at least if not more 750W

Well, just to let you know the core 2 quad is EOL and you wont be able to upgrade in the future without purchasing a new motherboard and cpu.

However, with that said, yes that current list is compatible.

thank you. one last question. I found a GTX 295 on Ebay for just over 100$ and I plan on buying it. would a 750W power supply be sufficient or do I need something higher?

Heh heh - sorry for the confusion Dragonguy.

Yeah, that PSU should be fine. Though, $100 for the GTX295 is ridiculously low. Caveat emptor!

Bomberboy brought up a good point about upgrades in the future. Its worth keeping in mind unless you plan on buying new anyway a few more years down the line.

Good luck with the build! Feel free to stop buy with further questions as you progress. The folks around here are rather helpful.

P.S. If you ever need an explanation for the chips and channels, just drop me a note. Again, sorry for the confusion. :)

Buy it now or auction? If its an auction be warned those things always are low until the last few hours of it. If its a buy it now, check the description carefully to ensure it is working as well as check the sellers feedback. Also remember that anything bought from ebay voids your warranty if the card is a BFG, PNY, EVGA, or most other manufacturers(only exception i know is XFX, and that is only if the seller gives you the code to transfer warranty).

yeah, I know. It's an auction. but still...for $200 it's still a good deal.

anyway thanks everyone for all the help.

Edit: do I need to buy a fan to fit over my processor?

Still dead set on the core 2 quad?(Need to know to recommend a fan) Either way you can get by with the stock heatsink but you can run much quieter and cooler with an aftermarket hsf.

Retail packaging will come with a heatsink and fan. You will be fine with that unless you plan on overclocking or you want to run the CPU cooler that the stock unit will allow. Then you would be looking at an aftermarket option.
