2.0 Ghz Intel Duo or 2.0 Ghz AMD 64-bit

I'm looking at a computer for college and was set on the 64 bit processor. I knew basically nothing about it other than it was the "newest and best" thing out. But now i see on some manufacturers websites that the newest processor out is the Intel Duo. I know nothing about this and was hoping somone could shed some light on it. I'm looking at a Compaq notebook, from my research they will give me the best performance for my money, atleast as far as mainstream brands go. Which processor would suit me best? I'm getting it for college use, so mostly for homework/internet surfing/music and some gaming. Money is not a factor, i want the best i can get so it will not be outdated in 3 months. Thanks in advance for any replies

Think it will be needed tho? I guess i phrased it wrong in my first post-cost is a factor, but i'm willing to spend whatever it takes-if it's reasonable-to have the best. The cost for the Duo is much higher isn't it?

I wouldn't worry so much about 64bit. I think the next big thing will be duel core. So far, not much can really take advantage of 64bit, but programs/games are slowly beginning to use duel core. However, I'm still running single core and I think you would be just fine for a few years if you stuck with single core yourself...

Yes, duo core is the way to go in mobile computing. Excellent performance and battery life. When are you starting college? 64 bit duo core is slated to arrive mid year, at earliest. With 64bit or 32bit, you'll be fine, Windows will support it.

Well now that i know this maybe i need to rethink my notebook decision. I was pretty set on the Compaq V2000Z model. Here's the specs on the one i was planning on buying
Operating System- XP Home Edition (I have will but Pro on it later)
Processor- AMD Turion 64 ML-37 2.0 GHZ/1MB Cache
Display- 14.0 WXGA BrightView Widescreen
Graphics Card-ATI Radeon Xpress 200M w/productivity ports
Memory- 256x2=512MB DDR SDRAM (I will upgrade it to 2 Gb later)
Hard Drive- 60 GB 4200 RPM Hard Drive
Primary CD/DVD Drive- 8x DVD Drive (have an external sony DVD/CD Burner)
Networking- 54g Integ Broadcam 802.11b/g WLAN and Bluetooth
Warranty- 2 Year express repair and accidental damage
For a total price of $974.98

Now that i've heard that the 64 bit really isn't the best buy, i need help finding something that would suit me better. I've heard good things about the M Processors. If anyone could find me a computer with similar specs to this for around the same price i would be very greatful. What brands should i be considering? This computer will be mostly used for homework, internet serfing, music and movies. The specs that I definitely want are 60+gb hard drive, 14-16 inch widescreen display, 2 ram slots (i already have gb ram sticks to install when i receive notebook), 2 year warranty with accidental damage, bluetooth, XP Home Edition (already have copy of pro that will be installed when i receive notebook) and i would like an upgraded graphics card. I do not need a burner, any additional software, extra batteries, XP pro or lots of RAM.

I came to this forum cause i was stumped on what to do with my confusion-hopefully somone can help me clear it up and help me find the right computer for me.

After shopping around for a new computer for college, I decided on the HP DV1000t. I liked the Idea of haveing the Core Duo Processor to handle multiple applications with no or little lag. I ordered it with Windows XP pro, 2.0GHz Core Duo, 1 GB ram, 80 GB hard drive. I also opted for the web cam, and the bluetooth option. If you are buying it for school, HP gives you a discount, so you might want to look into that part.

how much of a discount?

Umm it is around 70-100 dollars depending on the product. Doesnt seem like much, but you add that to the $100 instant savings, a 50$ Mail In rebate, free shipping, and a $80 rebate for a printer, and you save a half decent amount of money. Plus HP will take your old system in on trade, depending on the condition of it and the specs. You can go to their web site, and get a free quote on what they will give you on your system. This is what I was going to do, but I found someone who would give me the same amount for mine. So I agreed to that instead of having to ship mine to HP.

M Processor

I have a Compaq Presario notebook with Centrino technology and 1.65GHz M processor with 400MHz front side bus (the bus between chip and RAM).

I'm not a gamer, but I can run an Oracle database and simultaneously compile/build Java programs (I'm a Java programmer) using an integrated development environment. That's how I work when I travel by train or plane. I could probably also run an application server, but my compiling would slow down a bit.

That's some pretty heavy stuff in terms of computing requirements. I don't know of too many things outside of gaming that would compare -- if you're simultaneously running a few instances of OpenOffice, about 20-Firefox instances, downloading stuff and also watching porn videos, then no problem. But again, I don't know anything about gaming requirements.

I don't remember exactly, but think I paid around $700, which included some extra RAM.

the centrino duo is a 32-bit dual core processor with 64-bit "extensions" i would say go with the turion 64, is not dual core but its a true 64 bit processor

True it is a true 64 bit, but like everyone else says, there isn't software out for it. 95 percent of software still runs on 32 bit. So i'm gonna have to run 32 bit til new stuff comes out and then spend a shit ton more money to upgrade all my software to the 64 stuff, which i'm sure will not be cheap
