i have a 2.5 sata hdd that i need to format is there anything i can plu it into to attach it to a usb on my laptop to do it?

Pick one of these up. Comes in handy if you ever need to access other drives in future too.

Do you plan to put it into a laptop or desktop, or do you want to keep it as an external portable drive?

I would run checkdisk to make sure there are no major faults before formatting.
