2.66 p4 overheating

I built this computer two and a half years ago. It is running a 2.66 p4 it has a 478 pin. I have an intake fan in front of the case and exhaust in the back with a two fan power supply. it ran fine for 2 years then the active monitor started going off saying its getting to hot. I started monitoring it and under a 86% load it jumps up to 50-55 degrees C and the computer shuts down. If i let it idle at the log in screen it over heats. I just recently installed a Vortex Dream fan on the processor with a copper heat sink. I has a 70mm fan and goies to 41.97CFM on high and i also installed artic silver 5 grease. That did not make a difference at all it still over heats and with summer coming its gonna start doing it faster now. o ya i am not overclocking it either.
Please let me know what it could be cause its annoying when im trying to do some drafting on it.
thanks,
brad

So this happened with the stock cooling and the new HSF? Was everything applied correctly - was there a very thin layer of AS5? Also, 50-55C isn't that hot - I run up around 60C at constant full load on a warm day - so you might want to go into BIOS and check what the shutoff temperature, maybe set it at 65 or 70C.

Maybe your power supply went bad and is causing the over-heating, or possibly something funky witht he motherboard. See what other people have to say.

I just installed that powersupply about 3 weeks ago the old one went bad. I followed the directions on the as5 but it still hits the same temperatures that it did before with the stock heat sink and fan. What ever the stock temperature is set at is what it is still at and it was set at 55.
So its safe to let it hit 65 then?

Yeah, its definitely safe to bump it to 65. I've had mine above 60C before - no damage. You'd have to get above 70+ to start really doing damage to the CPU. Also, were you monitoring the temp before, or did you just start monitoring it when it started shutting down? P4s also have thermal throttling so if it detects the CPU is getting too hot, the core power is decreased thus lowering the temperature.

no never really paid to much attention before just when the alert came on. I went to the intel website and it said optimum temp is around 45 or something like that so i wasnt sure. I just figured to be on the safe side and just ask.
thanks
