2 Hard Drives and Server

I have tried installing a NAS Program on one of my older machines to turn it into a storage server. But, It didn't work out. I think the problem was I had a 20 GB HD in there and I did not partition it, So the Storage Software would be on one side and the storage on the other side. If I connect another 4 GB HD and install the Server Software on that and keep the 20 GB HD inside for the storage. Would that work?

what kind of software are you using? For a file server a simple OS install will do, any kind of small linux kernel would suffice fine and be completely compatible with windows over the network.

I'm using a program called FreeNAS. I tired putting the 2nd HD in and it only would see 1 drive. So, Back to the drawing board.
