hi guys

i am thinking of building a new system, as a kind of hobby and to learn how to do it. I would like a system with either 2 quad core cpus or maybe even 4. Is that possable? can you combine 2 i7 cpus or would i have to use another type of cpu? Ive googled this but couldnt find a decent amount of info. Do any of you experts have any experience or links to share about doing this kind of thing. In particular what cpu and motherboards to use.

Thanks

You need special CPUs designed to work in tandem or multiples - for Intel its the Xeon line and for AMD the Opteron. Typically these are referred to as workstations or servers, although the intended use for the two are different. To get an idea you can look at Dell's line (most of the major system builders have similar):

Look at the dual socket models. Naturally because of the precision required with multiple CPUs - plus the added hardware - they get very pricey.

Off course you need mobos built for dual sockets, often you need pricier ECC or error correcting memory, larger PSUs, and very industrial work workstatio graphics cards that cost an arm and a leg, although you can pair most with standard desktop graphics cards.

You should be able to find a lot more about the CPUs by going to the Intel or AMD websites. You can find the CPUs and mobos sold as "server" CPUs and mobos at newegg:

thank you that gives me somewhere to start, i ll look in to the xeon cpus. It will be used for 3d work video rendering and of course games. I thought the extra cpus would tear through render in no time. I ll start saving my money.
