I got a new copmuter that came with vista x64, I want to create another partition for XP, but I dont want to have any 3rd party programs to be installed on either the vista or XP partition but on its own partition just for program files. can this be done? will the programs be available on both vista and xp? or am I going to have to create a seperate vista program files partition and xp program files partition?

The idea is neat bro,You can access XP files on Vista, and vice versa, but it won't be possible to do what you're asking. (Some) programs in Vista won't work on XP cause that's way to different operating Systems (in terms of structure). Though there are some basic programs for both which can be run without just by clicking the executable, but apart from that you will need to install programs on XP
