i got a new computer which has an onboard video card and i was wondering if i could plug in my old card as well for increased performance??

my old card is a 32 mb but im not sure about the on board one

and if i can use my old card as well where do i plug in my monitor??

well ur onboard video is a chip that doesnt take space in ur computer. if u want to plug ur card in u have to figure out if ur motherboard has an agp slot or a pci-e slot. then figure out wat ur card is. if ur video card has a port for your monitor then once u plug it in u would attach the monitor there.

for increased performance??
You won't get increased performance for having an onboard video chip and a second card in a dual monitor setup, just one monitor will use one gfx card and the other monitor will use the other monitor. If you older card is agp, you can't do it because the onboard chip usually takes the place of the AGP slot until you actually put a card in the AGP slot. though a 32MB gfx card could easily be just a normal PCI gfx card.

I was not sure if you where asking if you could use your graphics card along with your onboard video for increased performance? Or did you mean to use your graphics card instead of your onboard video for increased performance?

If you wanted to use your onboard with your graphics card for increased performance much like an SLI setup then no. If your wanted to know if you could use your graphics card instead of the onboard for increased performance then we'd have to know what the onboard specs are. Answer obviously here is not sure due to lack of info.

sorry for the lack of information. i cant find any information on the video card other then the MT features an AGP 3.0 (8x AGP). the lady in the computer store said if i put in my old card that it would add additional memory but i thought id check here b4 i tried anything.

and i dont plan on using 2 monitors or anything, i just want to increase the current graphics

edit: the MT is an ECS 741gx-m if it matters and it does have an additional slot for where my card would fit

That is wrong.

so there is absolutly no gain in adding my old card

however, if its better then the onboard card i could install it and use it instead?

how do i find out what kind of grafics card i got with the moterboard?

No none.

If it's better then yes.

Do you have any documentation from when you purchased the computer? If you know the name of the motherboard then you can google for it. The motherboard should have it printed physically on the board somewhere. You can click Start, Run, type "dxdiag" and it should tell you under "system".

Actually she is probably right, jsut not in the way you are hearing her.

Your AGP card is 32MB you say? How big is your onboard?

I would assume its smaller than 32MB. So, by adding the AGP card and idsabling the Onboard Video, you infact GAIN video memory by switchign from (less than 32MB) to 32MB.

If in fact your onboard is larger than 32MB, this is not correct. But I would bet my money saying that even if it is bigger than 32MB, the AGP 8X 32MB card will still run better.

Good call 4W4K3. I also wondered if he misunderstood her, hence why I did not call her a liar LOL. I did not want to mention this as I did not want to confuse the poor fellow more in the case I did not make my explanation as clear as yours ;).

Switching from an onboard video adapter actually gives the computer back memory, but doesn't add (like stack on top of it). Thats because intergrated cards use your system ram, and separate ones have their own memory (32md, 64mb etc.).
