20/24 pin psu

I just got a new motherboard and just now realized it has a 24pin power connection on it. My psu only has a 20 pin connection. The connector will fit in but there are still 4 open holes. Will this work? I've tried looking around and read that it could but I dont want to ruin my new motherboard. Thanks.

For most, I'm pretty sure it'll work. I beleive those extra pins are just a pair of 12v connections(and grounds) I say give it a shot... I'm quite sure the worst that could happen is it just wouldn't work.

Ok so I tried it and it turns on fine. But the cpu fan did come on right away and I'm afraid to keep it on too long without the fan on. I'm not sure if the fan will come on when the cpu gets hotter or not. On start up, the fan moves a little but doesnt do anything. Does this sound okay?

As long as there's a heatsync on the processor, you should be fine. At least until you try to load windows and stuff like that. However, the fan should come on right away and stay on. Some processors might work without the fan running constantly, but by default, I've never seen a motherboard NOT run the fan

Okay, so I guess it is temperature controlled, because its on now. I was starting to get worried there for a second haha.

lol. Yeah, you don't need those extra pins. It's good if you can use them though. Some time when you get some extra coinage you can pick up a new PSU. No rush though.

Yea, same thing happened to me when i upgraded from my P4P800 to my A8N-SLi Deluxe. Mine runs perfectly fine without the extra 4.

Well, that all depends on what cpu you got. They all run at different temps. Like my P4, it ran at 27c idle, 41c load. As long as it stays under 60-70c it should be fine. I hear that even above 60c is fine, just dont go past 70c.

But then again, runnning alot of heat(50-60c) on the processor for long amounts of time will kill it slowly, so be careful.

As long as youre about 10*C under the 'Frying' temp of the processor, while its under full load,.. youre really fine ;)

sure.. if the CPU runs that hot, the lifespan is a bit shorter than normal,. but then.. i never heard of a processor dieing because of old age.. they're replaced with a newer/faster type before they die anyway.

anyhow.. im running a 20-pin PSU in my pc too atm... still saving some mone to get a 24-pin 600w Enermax. but it didnt look really neccecairy so far. :)
