Hello all,

I am new to most of this and this will be my first build. The computer will be used mainly to run cad programs (pro-e) so it needs a video card mean enough to scare little children. The bottom line is I wanna go fast and im looking to spend about $2000. This is some of the stuff ive picked out so far, remember Im new so tell me where Im throwing money away, where I should maybe spend a little more, tell me if there is a piece that is just plain silly.
The video card is really where I need some advice.

thanks Joe

i agree, 4 gigs is serious overkill, but for the video card go with the 1900XTX or a nvidia 7900GT OC, or what you might want to look at is the new nvidia 7950GX

its the new dual GPU card I think is $650

if your doing 3D work and designing with large files that need to be render by the card why are you getting a gaming card. If its for 3D programs and AutoCAD you would want a workstation card

i would suggest one of the quadro series

The actual rendering process is done by the CPU, but for example Autodesk Maya has a hardware renderer which uses the GPU to render different shaders along with the CPU in order to get better performance. And a "gaming" card will do just fine, sure the Quadro will be a bit faster in OpenGL, not by much though. And if he does some gaming, the Quadro's aren't known as very good cards when playing games. Plus the price for a Quadro or FireGL isn't in my oppinion worth it.

Thanks for the input guys, what do you think about the ram, is there any/what are the reasons to get the ddr2 900 vs the ddr2 800?

also should I be looking to get a separate smaller hard drive for my os 100g and then the 500g to store my files?
