$2000 Laptop or 2 Identical $1000 desktops?

I am trying to decide between buying a $2000 laptop or two identical $1000 desktops. (I will be living in two separate homes due to divorced parents.)

Also, just out of curiosity when looking at desktops, what do the nVIDIA® GeForce™ GTX 470M and nVIDIA® GeForce™ GTX 485M compare to for desktop GPUs?

Any recommendations or responses are appreciated.

Well....just so you know...laptops are made to be portable......if you were talking desktops I would understand the question, but in this case, if you want a nice laptop just put the money into one, get a case, and take it back and forth between the 2.

As for comparison, the 485m beats out an hd4890 and gtx280

Basically, what would be superior in terms of overall components (GPU, CPU, ects), a $1000 desktop or a $2000 laptop?

That's hard to say. But I think you could build a better desktop. The reason laptop equivalents are so much more is because the money put into designing those same components to fit in a laptop

At 2k Budget you can build two powerful desktops, which would be worth it. But I think as you will be moving between two homes, so I guess laptop is the best choice.
