24 pin to 20 pin adaptors necessary?

I have a 24 pin power supply, but my motherboard is 20 pin. Can I just plug the 24 pin power supply into the 20 pin motherboard leaving an extra 4 pins? Or do I need one of those 24 to 20 pin adaptors? Thanks!

depending on ur psu. some power supplies have 4 detachable pins for exactly that reason. but if they dont then ur probably gonna want to go wit hthe adapter to be safe.
