2900xt Crossfire, can't enable it?

Just installed a second 2900xt today, and having a few problems. First of all went in to CCC and enabled Crossfire, worked fine.

When I rebooted, had an error message stating there were no ATI drivers installed. Uninstalled CCC and display driver, rebooted, reinstalled driver, still the same. Rebooted again and everything seemed ok, until I went in to CCC to re-enable Crossfire but could not do so. Crossfire is listed, but there is no tick box to enable it.

I did notice that on the second card the red LED is on all the time, this was not on when I enabled Crossfire earlier. It is not on, on the first card which the monitors are plugged in to.

Any help much appreciated.

You may have trouble running crossfire with dual monitors. Try running it with only one of your monitors plugged in first.

i don't know much about setting up crossfire as i do not need to YET.
but all i can think of is check that the chip u join the 2 cards together with is on proply.
get the latest drivers http://ati.amd.com/support/driver.html chose your OS then pick radion then 2900 Series then download the driver and the control center it is combined

Does not make a difference if one or both monitors are connected. I have just reinstalled CCC (8.1, latest drivers) again and Crossfire is not showing up at all now. It has got to have something to do with this red light on top of the card, anyone know what it indicates?

Ah, I've just read on a French forum that a red LED indicates a power shortage, which is unlikely with your 1kw PSU = \
Stupid question, are you sure it's plugged into your PSU?

lol, yea, its plugged into my psu. I cant really see it being a power shortage either, not with a 1000w.

Edit: I've just done a psu calculator and its coming up with 680w. I did exaggerate on vcore and number of fans, etc (just to see)

Just to verify a few things. You did connect both an 8 pin and a 6 pin PCI-E adapter to both cards correct? You set your clock/memory speeds back to default right? And do you have the 8.1 drivers installed?

Yep, 8 pin and 6 pin to both cards. 8.1 drivers installed. As for resetting clock/memory, well, I kind of forgot to do that when I installed the second card. They are back at default clocks now.

I had a read up on my psu last night and it advised, if a card requires an 8 and a 6 pin, to make sure that both cables are plugged into the same +12v rail, I have made sure of this.

Edit: I tried one card (the one with the light on all the time) and it still has the light on, so power issues out the window.

There is no crossfire option at all now, the second card is not even being recognised.

Try the one card with the led on by itself. It sounded like you did that but you didn't give much info.

Try it by itself and run various intensive programs and such on it and make sure that the new card is indeed working properly to begin with. As you said it had the light on still, I would try this out, as it may be a faulty card.

I had the same prob. yesterday installing my two HD3870.. But my issue was that the memory was not read.... What I did was uninstall ccc and reinstall the driver disk and pretty much run the whole set up all over again... Update drivers if haven't.. But what I notice was it had to install the driver twice meaning for both 3870 cards.. I restarted my computer and enable crossfire.. MAN.... I tell ya.. It was so clear that I went to bed with a big headache... My eyes was just sucked in.... but good luck you'll love it once you get it started....:D

there should not be any red light in the 2900xt; i had it connected with the 8 pin pci plug only (and the MOBO plug). The correct connection is one 6-pin connector and one 8-pin connector or 2 6-pin connector.

Thats the only info I got from searching the web about the red light on the 2900XT. The light on my card only comes on for the first 1-2 seconds after startup, then turns off.

Na, no luck at all. I'm really getting tired of this now. Thank you all for your help.
I just can't get rid of the red light. I will have to get in touch with ATI, they should have some idea (fingers crossed).

Well, found out the problem. The red light indicates a thermal fault. I was told this by Sapphire. Going to send the card back to them, hopefully won't take to long.

Should be fine, at least you know it will get sorted eventually =]
I am looking forward to seeing your updated 3DMark score with that mean set-up when it's done :D
