my current system has this MB -ECS C51GM-M (V1.0) AM2 NVIDIA GeForce 6100 Micro ATX AMD Motherboard with a SATA HD 160gb as the master with XP as OS. I also have a gateway media center 610XL r1 that has major issues and I want to salvage the HD which is a 200 GB ICH5 dual channel Ultra ATA/DMA 33/66/100 which has os of xp media center

I tried just adding with to an open ide slot but the system wont recognize - do I need to do jumpersettings or something?

Yes you need to set the original hdd as master and the one your adding as slave. Also, you will likely have to format the new one because it is not going to recognize it with system information on it from XP media center.

thanks - will I loose my data on the one I am adding? I am trying to save it - thats why i am trying to add as a 2nd drive

If you format it you will lose your data yes. I dont know how to salvage it but im sure someone on here may have some things to try.

also how can I re-format it if the system wont recognize it?

Set it up as slave first, then download g-parted and boot the cd and it should find it assuming the drive is still operational.

Ok so I figured it ou - I just put a jumper marked slave and it all works so do I need to or should I remove the OS on the second drive?

Salvage your data that you need on that hard drive and format the drive.

Or you can just leave it all be. It doesn't really matter unless you want all the storage space you can.
