i want to intall a second HD to system just to store files
on how do i do this. and do i have to put a operating system on or not .
thanks in advance

if you already have an OS on another hdd in the computer you don't need to put one on. It's pretty easy to add a new hdd, just plug everything in, it should all be keyed so you can't plug it in upsidedown but if it's not the red stripe on the ribbon cable marks pin 1.

2nd drive

but do i have to set the jumper to 2nd slave master and will bios pick the drive up or will i have to set up bios to pick the drive up
or do i just plug the 2nd ide interface cable to hd and away we go. i thought there was more to it than that.

If either of them are on cable select then make both on cable select. If not, then if one is master than make the other salev and vice versa

I am constantly putting in and taking out hdds between my 2 comps, and I just have them all on Cable select for the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th hdds, but I dont touch the primary.

Yeah that works too :) (only when the one on the primary happens to coincide with the setting as established by the Cable Select on the secondary)

The primary is SATA on my new one, that helps

Is there an IDE cable that you can put more than 2 hdds on?

that would be useful bc I am trying to combine like 4 older comps into mine without having to transfer the data

Ahhh the SATA helps indeed :) As for the PATA cables, no, they are limited to two such devices only, the only way to get more drives is to add a RAID/IDE controller :)

PATA?

No, I don't wanna mess with RAID, too confusing.

Maybe I'll try to figger it out sometime, but not right now

PATA = Parallel ATA = Old-school ATA = the stuff you connect CDROMs with (other than SCSI, USB, IEEE etc)

O. so basically the same as IDE, without getting technical

IDE = Integrated Drive Electronics

IDE is roughly and for all intents and purposes the same as ATA (AT Attatchment). ATA comes in two flavors, Serial and not-Serial (i.e., Parallel). SATA you are familiar with and PATA is the the old-school type. So Both SATA and PATA are types of ATA and by-proxy, types of IDE. So both SATA and PATA are IDE drives. (another way of looking at it is, "if its not SCSI, USB or Firewire than its IDE"

without getting technical
Short Answer = yes

I can tell the diff between IDE and SATA, that's not too hard.

I found a cord in a box in the attic, and it looks like IDE, except that its wider, and has a blue stripe instead of a red. Any idea what it is?

Yeah, but do you know what the second cord is?

If you don't respond, I'll assume you label this aas pointless banter, and want me to create a new thread.

Well the text right above it is "SATA"

Now why do you gotta go starting crap like that? Ive answered everything so far.

I know

But it's not ide/pata or whatever

We're just going around in circles

I'll take a pic of it and post it later
