2nd HD for general faster performance?

I was thinking of adding a second drive for performance and some security as well (backup and what not). Should I go with a RAID setup, or just put a 2nd drive in and run them off XP normally. If I did that, I was thinking of just putting games and such on the 2nd drive or just run windows off of it or something.

The one I was looking at was the Raptor 10Krpm 36 gig model. What do you guys think? My current HD is a SATA 80 gig 7200rpm from dell, not sure of the exact manufacturer.

Thanks! :)

don't RAID any hdds that are vastly different in size, you lose all the excess space on the larger disk(s)

Yeah, I just read that last night. Basically then, would it be worthwhile to use a 2nd hd and just run it through windows normally? As in, would I see any performance gains?

you might see some slight gains by having windows on one drive and your programs on another, but it wouldn't be very much. All it would do is help loading times slightly because all the drives energy would be used for loading the program not doing stuff with windows swap file and loading the program

Yeah... it'd be cool... I'll probably just save the $$ and get another gig of ram...lol 2 gigs would be fun to play with...:)

Id say go for JBOD (just-bunch-of-drives), RAID isnt all that fancy. Slot the second drive in there normally and have the virtual memory off that drive instead

Not sure if you're gonna see much difference between 1GB and 2GB ... considering theres always tons of free physical mem leftover.... it depends on what you do tho
