3 old pc's. and there was 1

so im new to the site so i geuss ill start with
hello everyone
i need some advice.
i have 3 old pcs, 2 i have right now the other is on its way
and i was wondering if i could take them and build jus one good pc up
i was wondering if there was someone out there that could help me
do this as i am not a pc guy but it seems like a fun project and my
little bro realy likes computers and maybe this would help him
learn somthing also
uhm so one of em is a dell. pentium 4 is on the case
and the other is a pro 21st? ive never heard of it
the other hasnt made it home yet but its on the way
let me also add that the pro 21st worked perfect till i got brave and decided to tear stuff out of it, big mistake
i pulld out the ram, took a look, stuck it back in and the pc beeped and smellt like burnt plastic. so im thinking im gonna need a new one of those.
but i wouldnt know were to find one or what kind to look for
they all run windows xp so there not that old, and everything seems to work fine but i dont need 3 pcs so what can i do to make one good one....
the goal is to make a pc me and my brother can play games one, music and videos. run internet to and jus play with altogether

You need to be a lot more specific.

You could take the fastest processor, if its the Pentium 4 then your not going to have much luck with gaming unless its internet games you want to play or some counter strike.

I would look up all the Motherboard models in each computer.

Then find out which motherboard can support the latest processor.

See if the remaining RAM, from the other computers are compatible with that motherboard. If so, stick em in. CORRECTLY. (make sure they are pushed all the way in and snap in)

Then go from there.

If you make your post more clear and descriptive people can be a lot more helpful. I'd say wait till you get all 3 computers then post each computers specifications in Detail.

Mother board type, Ram type, Power Supply type (mainly watts), Video Card (IF ANY), if you dont see a card plugged into the motherboard than its probably integrated and that doesnt count as a video card.

ok so im going to write down everything you jus said to me so i can do it,
ram type motherboard something,
and the other pc will be in tonight
also what is the correct way to stick a ram in? i thought i had it the same way i took it out but looking at it now its all burnt in one little tiny spot
so im geussing it and the port it was plugged into is done for.....
sorry about me not being so specific im new to this, im trying though
i will post again tomorrow before i touch anything and put up the pc types then ill start tearing it apart looking at the stuff you said to look at.......
and putting the specifications up here
one more question tho, should i jus tear em apart. careully
do the research and see what fits and dont. i know ram doesnt fit any mother board but i dont understand the compatibility issues with em
also i dont even know what a graphics card looks like so im going to need something on that to
anyways ill be back when the other pc is in hand

okay so i feel realy dumb, looking at the ram now i see the little nitch in less then half way across the stick, duh thats the way it fits in and of coursse, the one i fried was fit in (forced) backwards.......damnit that was the good one too

Yea you probably ruined the motherboard too. You can remove that ram stick and still see if things run correctly. Hopefully the motherboards on the other 2 PC's are better.

without getting too technical, there are a lot of different types of ram out there, some are meant to work better with eachother (2 of the same kind for dual channel ram). but if your just looking to work with what you got, then make sure they are meant to fit the slots you want to put them in, 240 pin needs to go into a 240 pin slot..(the metal connectors on the side of the ram).
