3 Radeon 4890s in xfire vs 2 Radeon 4870X2 in xfire

Hey guys just wondering which is a better setup? 3 4890s in crossfire or 2 4870X2s in crossfire? I'm building a computer for my brother, and this was something that I came across. Anyone have an idea?
 
Depends on the scaling of the game, but i would go with tri 4890's, quad gpu crossfire doesnt give nearly as much gain as even just two in crossfire...

The 4890 wont really use up an entire x16 slot anyhow, you have to think that each gpu on a 4870x2 only gets x8 to begin with, as its two gpu's sharing an x16 slot;)
