3 Tests-What is my internet speed?

Just did 3 test for my internet speed.

Test 1- Download-26.93 Mbps Upload-2.35 Mbps

Test 2- DL-27.06 UL-2.33

Test 3-DL-28.51 UL-2.02 Latency was-59ms

Can someone tell me what my internet speed is? Is this decent speeds? I do no gaming but I do stream to a Roku Stick. My contract ends in April and I have 3 providers. So I do have a choice.

Thanks !

The speed will vary but from the results you posted it looks like you are averaging 27Mbps (megabits per second) for download which is plenty for streaming to your Roku stick. In addition you are averaging a little over 2Mbps upload which is fine. Only 1 of the tests has a latency shown, that latency is not great (it's how long the delay is when a packet of data is sent and received, lower is better) but not horrible. Latency is important to people that play games over the net because it effects how fast the game updates.

As to whether your speed is decent or not, the answer is: it depends. Personally, I would kill to have that download speed, my connection maxes out at 4Mbps down and 4Mbps Up (I can watch videos on my Roku 3 without issue). I'm sure there are others on this forum who have faster speeds as well as others with slower. The important thing is are you getting the speeds you are paying for? What level of performance has your provider contracted with you for?

Providers generally have multiple tiers of performance that you can contract with them for. For instance, if you have contracted for a service that is supposed to be "up to" 40Mbps down and 5Mbps up then you should complain to your provider that you aren't getting the speed you are paying for. Note the "up to" verbiage which all providers seem to use, but nonetheless, you should get close to what they state. However, if you have contracted for a connection of "up to" 25Mbps down and 2Mbps down then you are getting what you contracted for with a little extra.

Another thing to be aware of is that many providers have a data cap where you are limited to x amount of data downloaded and uploaded per month and if you exceed that data cap they will do things like limit your download speed, charge you extra money or even shut you out for the remainder of the month.

So in considering the 3 providers you have a choice for you should ask what down/up speeds they provide, what they charge for it, if there is a data cap or not and, if there is a data cap, what they do if you exceed it. You may also want to know if they provide 24hr support if that is important to you.

The bigger question is what kind of speed package do you pay for from your ISP?

Like I said I don't do any gaming at all. I have the Roku stick(EVERYONE should have some kind of streaming device)and all my movies stream just fine. My contract is up in April and thinking of dropping cable(99.9%)and go with just the internet and maybe the phone. So I would like to keep my ISP if possible. What i'm surprised by is how little the Roku uses. I really want to dump cable. Times are changing. Thanks for the info!
