32/64 Bit Confusion?

Many of the programs that I use in media production trumpet the fact that they are now written to support 64bit processing.

I currently have a 32 bit processor and as a result, have been told that I can't recieve any of the benefits of my 64 bit capable applications.

I'm thinking of getting a new desktop that of course has a 64 bit and probably a dual core chip inside.

What concerns me is that I've heard that Operating Systems also come in 32 and 64 bit configurations. If I'm running a 32bit OS, does it matter to my 64 bit capable applications if I have a 64 bit processor?

Will the 32 Bit OS, by default, downgrade all of the computers processing to 32 Bits no matter what type of processor I have, or does the 32 Bit OS only limit the OS's performance to 32 bit?

Yes... probably... I'm not that sure. What program are you talking about?

Yes, or in other words, 64bit will work with a 32bit OS... You can run 98 on a 64bit OS and it would work...
