320mb vs. 640mb

I am thinking of getting a better video card when I get paid in 2 weeks, but have a question. I game on a ViewSonic 22" Widescreen with a res of 1680x1050. Would it be a better idea for me to get the 640mb version of the 8800gts or would the 320mb be fine? I've had a lot of people tell me the 320 runs bad on a res this size (which I find hard to believe, and which I know is not true) but what would be more beneficial in your opinions?

Well it's not that the 320MB wont run the games well, which it will, but I know some games wont run well at 1680x1050 if you run them maxed out.

Yeah, a 640mb would be more beneficial in your position. The higher than normal resolution, along with larger DX10 could contribute to the early demise of a 320mb. You would be in a safer position were you to acquire a 640mb version.

Still go with 640 will be future proof for a little while or just spend the mula on the GTX although they will have a better card by christmas.

For me a GTX is out of the question. I figured the 640 would be more beneficial but I just dont know how much.

This review say theres a 15% difference between the two cards at a 1920 x 1200 resolution. They also state that the main reason to buy a 640mb is that enabling the AA and AF filtering can push the card 40% to 85% above the 320mb. According to this review a 320mb would be absolutely acceptable for the resolution you want.

Tomshardware seems to agree with above site, however you should note that some people believe tomshardware to be deceptive at times.

But Vrzone states the same thing with benchmarks.

I'm alittle shocked, I remember seeing benchmarks with the 640 doing much better at higher resolutions. I guess i can say that the 640mb will perform better with Dx10's increased texture size, but that is hardly the case with Dx9 when textures are increased..

320 for sure. yes the 640 will give u better performance at higher resolution. Many said that 640 will be more future proof but this is not true. The G80 series aren't going to last u long. I just run a test with my 8800 ultra with lost planet under DX10, I can barely made it to 23 fps with everything max out. So in general get the 320 and use it until end of this year and switch to G90 series which is true DX10 card.
