3870X2 vs 3870 Crossfire

Ok as the title says.

Which should i get.

Has anyone seen a review with Crysis and CoD4 as a bench?

I am now thinking i should go for the 3870X2 cause i can get one, with similar performance to crossfire 2 3870s, and then when prices drop, ill CF to another one. Also i wont really need a new MOBO

What yall think

thats the thing, some places praise ATI, saying its a great card and others say its bad (typically ones with Nvidia ads all over the place)

Thats also very off as the GX2 is way above the GTS 512!!!! and in this its below?!?!?!?!

Here is a more accurate one
http://www.tomshardware.com/2008/04/01/nvidia_geforce_9800gtx_review/index.html

Now im just thinking.

I wanted steer away from SLI as the mobo ill need cost $120 more than the equivalent X38 mobo

So yeah.

Will the X2 improve with drivers? they say it will?

so what you still think

Yeh, it will improve with drivers, i still think you are better off waiting until the 9900GTX comes out in July.

Improve? The 3870X2 is an awesome performer for the price. Basically over time, you'll learn that alot of the reviews you see are not so legit, or major fanboyism. Bigfella you should take a gander at some of the personal results and compare those. Thats as real as your going to get. In every scenario i very rarely see an 8800GT SLI outperform a 3870X2 or 3870 CF. And have never seen a 9600GT do so. I always go for the best price/performance, rather it is nvidia or ATI. I hate seeing people post false information, every thread like this members always throw up some review links, its ridiculous.

ON TOPIC, to answer the computer freaks original question. Two 3870's do slightly lead a 3870X2, but if your buying now, its good to go with a 3870X2 in order to leave room for upgrading. Theres really not enough difference to matter though.

Custom PC is far from a fayboy website, www.custompc.co.uk and for a 22" monitor its complete overkill. But i am glad you are happy with it, it is a nice card, i just don't think i would buy one, thats all. The 9800x2 is clearly faster, but what the HD3870x2 has in its favour is a great performance / price ration, however, i think both the green and red x2 cards suck and are quick "knee jerk" reactions from both parties. I would wait until the next series of cards, probably the 9900GTX etc.

the 9 series, unfortunately, suck.

they are better, yes, then the 8 series but by such a small margin that it is just stupid. instead of waiting i got an 8800gt now and i'll wait to see what ATI brings to the table.

why?!?!?! 20 Euro difference for better performance

And will a 9900 come out?

I am still gonna wait till August. Ill see if the new R700 architecture comes out. and if its any good (ill still prefer an intel chipset mobo).

so ill still wait

well now my options are

9800GTX: better than 512 GTS by a bit and the 3870X2, but need SLI mobo (not a bad thing but i need one that supports DDR2 up to at least 1066 (Asus Striker 2 formula)
3870X2: More expensive, but get nearly same performance, and i get a X38 mobo
9900GTX: Might be the best, but could be too expensive (like old GTX)
new ATI Architecture: might just be mind blowing :p

With all respect, I'm against that. First we were simply waiting for the 9xxx series to come. When they finally come (9600GT and 9800GX2) now everybody doesn't buy them cause they're waiting for the much better for the price 9800GTX, then it comes and nobody buys it cause it would be much better thinking to wait for the 9900 or whatever.

I don't think he wants to wait with his X1650 until the GeForce 9900GTX or the 115345GTX or the 9990000GTX2 come out. And being reallistic, the X1650 is not the best card for today's games so the HD3870's will do plenty, no need to wait for other cards to come out IMO :)

On topic:

Get 2 x HD3870, it's cheaper. ;)

Did I read it correctly? The 8800GTS 512mb version is gonna get better overtime with driver updates?! Wohoo! I love my 8800GTS, i'd recommend this card anyday. $300 total shipped to my door. 11k 3dmark06 with everything back to stock settings!

Performance will improve on any card as drivers improve, but don't expect to gain 5FPS in games and hundreds of points in 3DMark.

BTW, I got 14K in 3DMark06 with my 2900XT :)
