Can the 3Com 7760 Access Point be used "roaming"?

I am about to install two, and want to know if I can set the SSID's identical on an open network. The two AP's are in the same building. I know some models allow this, and then laptops etc will jump from one AP to the other.

Any info?

Regards.

Hi there,

If you install the first access point with SSID as "testing" for example and the second access point as "testing1" within windows xp you can add both of them as trusted points and the clients will connect to the access point provide the best signal.

Is this what you meant, if you need more info let me know

Hi, thanks.

What I actually meant was can I put both SSID's as 'testing'.

I know you can with some makes of access point, and they allow laptops to then 'roam' from one to the other without drops ar anything.

I have installed both access points, and set the SSID's the same. In windows, one SSID shows up, and you can connect. You can then move from one end of the large room to the other without loosing a connection, and looking in the wireless on line log, the computer shows up as jumping from one to the other, so seems to work ok.

Hi there,

i have never heard of setting the SSID's the same on both access points and get the laptop roaming like that but well done, sounds like you have it working, i will know it works when i go to install my 2 wireless access points

Cheers

I believe it only works with some, and not others. Some have a button to check in the settings to allow the roaming.

I bought the two 3com ones with a chance they would not work this way, but just thought if they didn't I would have two SSID's - Testing 1 and Testing 2 for example.

Regards.
