Hi, I am new to this forum and would love advice on the following setup. I am building a computer for fun, but also work I do with 3d CAD software. I have a theater room already and am going to get a projector that is 3d capable.

Here is what I am looking at getting right now:

Intel Core i7-950 Bloomfield 3.06GHz LGA 1366 130W Quad-Core Processor BX80601950

COOLER MASTER HAF X RC-942-KKN1 Black Steel/ Plastic ATX Full Tower Computer Case

CORSAIR CMPSU-750TX 750W ATX12V / EPS12V SLI Ready CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS Certified Active PFC Compatible with Core i7 Power Supply

MSI Big Bang-XPower LGA 1366 Intel X58 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard

HITACHI Ultrastar 15K600 0B23663 600GB 15000 RPM SAS 6Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive

A-DATA Gaming Series 12GB (6 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model AX3U1600GB2G9-3G

Any suggestions, helpful hints or feedback would be greatly appreciated!

Why is that if I may ask?

Because it is good bang for buck, however because you are on a projector at high resolutions, it probably won't be strong enough to maintain constant FPS in games at highest settings in 3D. What would your budget be for the card?

Well looking over your build, there are a few things I would change:

1. Your hard drive, for 2 reasons. Firstly, it is Hitatchi, who don't make reliable drives. They are certainly better than they were, but by no means a manufacturer I would trust important data to. Secondly, For the price, you are better off getting an SSD + storage drive. You will get greater speed, less power usage, less noise, greater reliability and greater capacity for the price

2. MSI Big Bang, whilst a very good board, is huge overkill for anyone. You can save some money there

There are minor improvements, and with the money saved from those 2, large improvements, that can be made. Adding up the prices of all the parts listed + the $300 you said for the graphics, I assume your budget is around $1800-$2000 . With that figure:

CPU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115211 $295

Motherboard: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128456 $170

Memory: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231260 $220

Case: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811112244 $200

SSD: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820227542 $145

Storage: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136490 $65

Power Supply: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817371025 $115

DVD Drive: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827135224 $18

Graphics: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130590 $530

Total before MIR: $1758

The system as it is now is great, could add another SSD to put them in RAID0 for extra speed, throw in an after market CPU HSF, or just leave it as is and pocket the extra money

Thanks Aastii. I have two questions. Why would you suggest that box? The reason I liked the one I had originally put down is because of the fans. Also, I want to go with a bluray player because this computer will be in my movie theater room and will be the bluray player. Why do you suggest just the dvd player?

Although slightly more expensive, the case is higher quality, larger, it does have several fans in there already (2 120mm on the front, 1 80mm (I think it is) on the back as exhaust), and, this is personal, but aesthetically I personally think it looks better.

As for the drive, I only suggested that as I wasn't aware whether or not you would be using bluray, most systems only need a DVD drive, so you can install your OS and any drivers. If you want to add a bluray drive in there, go for it, no reason not to :). You won't need a DVD drive as well if you get a combo drive, as it can read both DVD and bluray
