3d graphics on EeePC

So I just discovered, much to my surprise, that my little EeePC (model 1001PXB) can run FFXI at low settings. This is great, as my powerful sager laptop died recently, and I was worried that if I wanted to keep feeding my mmo addiction, my desktop would have to follow me back and forth between college and home.

I just want to make sure, though, that I won't be doing any damage to the little thing by using it for 3d gaming...

I downloaded CPUID Hardware Monitor to check temps, but there obviously isn't a GPU to monitor...CPU core is in the high 60s to low 70s while under load. Does this seem safe?

EDIT: the cpu is an intel atom n450

Yes, it's safe. You won't break it by gaming. You're alright until you start hitting eighties or so, that's a little warm even for a portable.

Admittedly desktop AMDs and laptops run a bit hotter, I personally wouldn't let my CPU (regardless desktop or company) go above 60c, ever.

Well, I was getting a lot of conflicting information, so I decided to ask intel...here's what they had to say:

Mike: Yes, It is the maximum normal temperature under normal usage.

Mike: For mobile processor, the temperature is a little bit high because there is no fan. But it should be safe.

Mike: Yes, between 60 to 70 degress is okay since there is no fan on the processor.

“Callidor”: Alright. And if it gets above 70, should I be worried then?

Mike: It is still within the range of TJUNCTION of your processor, it should be okay "Callidor".

No they won't. Firstly, those numbers are sort of "recommended figures" and they won't start breaking at those temps, secondly, they're all desktop processors (except the two T**** processors listed which have their maximum temperature at... 100 degrees celcius, a little over 60), and laptop/mobile processors will be alright with higher temps since being a mobile processor usually means that your cooling won't be as good.
 
My girlfriend's laptop screams up to low 90's sometimes when she's gaming. I'd never let mine get that hot, but she hasn't had hers blow up on her at any point yet. Usually if a CPU gets too hot, the mobo will simply reboot the computer to prevent damage.
 
I would say so. Its far from ideal, but I've seen worse. Much worse. Old celerons running at 85*c at idle because the fan/heatsink was packed with dust bad. Even that computer is still going and its almost 10 years old. I'd say you're fine. See if you can put in a small fan or two yourself if you really want to try and get the temperatures down.
 
Yeah but high GPU temps are much more acceptable than high CPU temps. The GTX480 hits high 80's low 90's with ease if I'm not mistaken. Graphics cards can take a lot more heat abuse than CPU's can. Granted, 120 like in the link you posted is ridiculous, but still, you can't cheat and change components like that! :P
