hi ive just setup my first system and i have a problem which i have no idea how to fix, when i boot up it goes into windows and then restarts and keeps doing this

i think it may be a problem with the cpu, but im not sure. its a 3ghz prescott with ht technology and 1024 cache, and the motherboard is an abit ic7-g

any help would be appreciated

Check the memory :) (you might even want to loadup the BIOS defaults to make sure there's not autoOCing)

You need to bump up the VCore voltage. That mobo takes a lot of juice. Do that through BIOS. Post back.

memory? what would that have to do with the problem?? have 1gb 2 x 512 geil pc3200 ultra btw
Exccessively OCd memory or unstable or bad memory can cause crap like that.

You need to bump up the VCore voltage. That mobo takes a lot of juice.
Isnt VCore for the CPU? (or is it also for the mobo)

Your processor isnt getting enough power to open or run windows so it is shutting down. I am a ABit tech guy and this problem is very frequent. What kind of PSU are you using?

its a standard 420w psu that came with the case, i do have a 550w qtec one that i havent put in yet cos i need to diy a bit

PSU's that come with cases are typically junk. They advertise 420w but cant hold their rails for anything. Its all about weight, the heavier the better. If you feel like you can throw it 30 yards you might as well do that. A nice antec 420w weights about 5 lbs

Well if it isnt the problem now it most likely will be later. Those things crap out on these ABit juice hogging boards a lot, if it isnt a quality psu. Try bumping up the vcore first with the old one before you go taking it apart. If that doesnt work try the other PSU, clear your CMOS too before you bump the vcore too just for precaution.

in work at the mo so ill give it a try when i get in, increasing the vcore isnt gna put anything else in my machine at risk is it? how much should i increase it by anyways..

Put the VCore to 1.7 . If that doesnt work maybe try 1.725 . No it wont hurt anything at those voltages.

Ok, just checking because some people think that is possible and has the same results as what you are having now. I would also try your memory in different slots. (are you running them in dual channel mode?)

i think so! like i said this is my first time so i knew id make some mistakes along the way...

Just make sure they are in the correct slots, looking at the picture there is 2 sets of 2 slots. Check your manual to see which to put in for dual channel mode.

Ok i downloaded the manual and this could also be your problem.
When installing two DIMM modules: Install DIMM modules of the same type and size for slots [DIMM1]+[DIMM3] or slots [DIMM2]+[DIMM4]
Im betting you put them in 1 and 2?

yup 1 and 2 doh!

Well give the ram switch a try, then try the vcore. My bets on the vcore though because it should still run the ram in those slots just not reconize them to run Dual Channel 400.
