4-Pin ATX Issues in a Dell

I have an old(ish) dell dimension 8400... as some of you may know i have had multiple problems with this in the past.

my latest is with this 4-Pin ATX connector

because of this connector the pc will not always boot properly, the power button has a Green light for if all is fine and an orange if it is not fine. sometimes the orange light will show and the pc will not boot... when this happens i have figured out that if i just discconnect and reconnect this 4-pin connector and boot the pc again its fine.

does anyone know why it might be like this? and where would the source of the problem be?

any help would be much appreciated.

Try a different power supply.
If the different PSU duplicates the problem, then the connector on the board is going bad.
 
well its just about a brand new board, i had to buy a new one due to the old one failing... lol...

two of the plugs (shown in the picture) look like they have been "burnt", could this be part of the problem?
 
Yeah, burnt looking connectors is not a good sign.
It still could be the power supply though. Don't buy one, borrow one from somewhere.
If the borrowed PSU stabilizes the PC, then buy a new one.
If there is no change, then you may want to forget trying to fix the thing.

What are the specs of the Dell in question?
If it's a fairly stout PC, you may want to consider finding an off the shelf (aftermarket) motherboard/case/PSU to transfer most of the Dell hardware to.

Just my thoughts.
 
its a Dell Dimension 8400

P4 3.0ghz
512mb ram standard (now has 1.5GB)
250gb HDD
x800 128mb radeon graphics
creative soundblasted Live! sound card... cant remember the rest
