I keep getting this error message "404 Not Found" every time I type something on my search bar on my browser page. The page loads up ok, just that I cant go no where from there! I am operating internet explorer 7.

I reset all browser settings to default and cleared my cashes and cookies, still getting the error!

Can some one help?

I think you are infected. What search bar are you using?

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from here or here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version. Please keep updating until it says you have the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • A log will be saved automatically which you can access by clicking on the Logs tab within Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

If for some reason Malwarebytes will not install or run please download and run Rkill.scr, Rkill.exe, or Rkill.com. If you are still having issues running rkill then try downloading these renamed versions of the same program.

EXPLORER.EXE
IEXPLORE.EXE
USERINIT.EXE
WINLOGON.EXE

But DO NOT reboot the system and then try installing or running Malwarebytes. If Rkill (which is a black box) appears and then disappears right away or you get a message saying rkill is infected, keep trying to run rkill until it over powers the infection and temporarily kills it. Once a log appears on the screen, you can try running malwarebytes or downloading other programs.

Download the HijackThis installer from here.
Run the installer and choose Install, indicating that you accept the licence agreement. The installer will place a shortcut on your desktop and launch HijackThis.

Click Do a system scan and save a logfile

Most of what HijackThis lists will be harmless or even essential, don't fix anything yet.

When the hijackthis log appears in a notepad file, click on the edit menu, click select all, then click on the edit menu again and click on copy. Come back to your reply and right click on your mouse and click on paste.

Post the logfile that HijackThis produces along with the Malwarebytes Anti-Malware log

Are you sure you have internet access? It's possible you may be loading a cached page. Go into internet options and change your homepage to www.yahoo.com click apply. Exit the broswer and reopen it and see if it opens yahoo and then see if you can browse anywhere, do not use the search box, use the address bar. If so then you are infected. Please follow my previous instructions.

Click on start, click on run, type cmd press ok. When the dos prompt appears type ipconfig /all and give me the details for the ip address, dhcp server and dns servers.

Can you post a screen shot of just the ipconfig window? You may have to reset your modem and router. The dns servers should be numbers like i have circled not letters, looks more like a mac address. If this data is true, thats why you can't browse anywhere.

How can I get screen shot? I am reluctant to reset my router and modem simply because all my other laptops on my network including the pc are working fine and the last time I did that I have a hard time setting everything back up ( I have 3 computers on this network and the one in question is 4th).

Besides, this laptop in question is a new laptop I just got yesterday and it had quite alot of crap I had to clean out!! This issue is the last of its problems that I see with it.

Is it brand new or did you get it from someone? If you got it from someone, I would just reinstall windows.

To do the screen shot of just the ipconfig window. On my keyboard its alt-prtscn button and then open paint and press ctrl-v. Then save the picture as a jpg and attach it to your post by clicking on the paper clip up in the formatting tools where you type your reply.
