4870 temperature question...

hey guys, for my build i am looking at the 4870 seeing as that seems to be the graphics card of choice for most people on this forum. I was just a little worried about the temperature of the card pertaining to the temperature in my house. I live in Indiana, so the weather is always changing. In the summer my family rarely runs the a.c., so obviously it's not the coolest place on earth. I have a antec 900 case ready to be furnished and i think it has pretty good air flow, any thoughts on how my pc will perform in the summer or any tip on cooling my computer in a not so cool house (or will it even matter that the ac isn't running)?

i plan to use the 2.4 Ghz quad core or the wolfdale core 2 duo if that makes any difference...

thanks guys

You can set the fan speed on the 4870 to whatever you want. I usually check the temp (with CCC software that comes with the card) every now and again just to check.

I have mine on 40% and that never gets above 45C idle. If you see that in summer it gets hot just push the fan up a bit.

yeah with my 4870 the fan % is at 40 and the same of about 43C...Hah when i play UT2004 for 6 hours straight my temp hardly increases...maybe too 48C, but UT2004 isnt really demanding.

Even with the card clocks i have it at 819.2(gpu clock) and 1200(memory clock)
an good tool for OC'ing your card and test is AMD GPU Clock Tool, just google it!

Oh and I have the antec 900 too, great choice for cooling! however I added 2 more fans...

So far no problems in the 4 weeks with the 4870! Im very happy with it :)

I was given this code from another person...

works great!

but first in the CCC advance panel you have to create a profile first in oreder to this code.

Theres a few otherways but this one worked the best for me.

ok...

<Feature name="FanSpeedProtocol_0">
<Property name="FanSpeedProtocolProperty" value="Percent" />
</Feature>
<Feature name="FanSpeedAlgorithm_0">
<Property name="FanSpeedAlgorithm" value="Manual" />
</Feature>
<Feature name="FanSpeedRPMTarget_0">
<Property name="Want" value="0" />
</Feature>
<Feature name="FanSpeedPercentTarget_0">
<Property name="Want" value="60" />

"FanSpeedAlgorithm" in this section by default it says automatic...you want to change it to "Manual" exactly to it looks like above.

"Feature name="FanSpeedPercentTarget_0">
<Property name="Want" value="60"

Now in this section, The "Want" value by default is "20" change it so it say 40 - 60

Depending on your systems cooling, you might have to play with the setting as the noise from the GPU fan can be loud, but just play with it until you have a 40C - 45C temp.
This temp seems to be sufficient.

Oh and to access this setting you must find the folder in ati's profile folder

hope this helps

Another thing, this profile that you made must opened in wordpad in order to change anything

since we are discussing stuff about video cards i always wanted to know whats that disc that comes with the video card

That disc consists of drivers for the card/s and most cases the control panel for the card/s for maintenance/settings

Go ati, set the temp, and dont worry about temps. =p

Make sure you turn overdrive on in CCC.
Your comp temps should be fine and all the air from the card gets pushed out rather quickly.

so you guys are saying that it shouldn't matter that my house isn't air conditioned in the summer?
Depends on where you live. In souther Australia, yea it does matter. In Antarctica, not so much. How hot does it get inside?
bah i hate ati cards, get an nvidia and don't worry about temps
Care to post something constructive for a change?

i live in midwest indiana so the summers are very different year after year... so hotter than others, inside my house, in the summer, it is usually 80 degrees Fahrenheit. is that ok?
