Hey guys first post, great forum by the way, used the search feature to answer all my questions without making a post. I wanted to get your guys opinion on deciding what type of ram I should get in which quantity.

I want to get PC6400(800) and I was thinking of doing 4x512MB of Corsair XMS ram such as this

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820145040

or should I get the big guns such as the Corsair Dominator series PC6400

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820145168

Budget isnt really much of a concern, just would take like a week longer to save the cash to purchase the Dominator.

This will be going on a ASUS Crosshair motherboard with AMD Athlon 64 X2 Windsor AM2 4200+ 65W. This is my first PC build from ground up unlike my previous PC's where I just added to it.

2x1GB is better for expanding for more ram with the 4x512mb you are LOCKED in at 2GB when you could go to 4 GB with 1GB sticks

would you think I'll get more performance going the 1GB stick way, or would even having 2GB in total be overkill, I keep reading posts with people saying over 1GB is overkill. Also reading my Crosshair manual states if I'm using Windows 32bit that its recommended not to go above 3GB of ram and Windows 64 max out at 8GB.

more ram is never bad but there is overkill

if you don't run ram intense programs why buy it:confused:

a RAM intensive program today isn't necessarily going to be a RAM intensive program tomorrow... so saving space for upgrades later isn't a bad idea anymore...
