Whats the difference between sempron and athlon?
also i had 2 competeing computers
~gateway 816gm
  • Athlon 64 3400+ / 512MB DDR / 200GB HDD / DVD±RW Dual-Layer / CD-ROM / Flash Media Reader / NVIDIA NV34 Monza 128MB Video / Windows XP Media Center 2005 / Refurbished Media Center PC
~emachines T6524
  • AMD Athlon 64 3500+ 2.2GHz / 1GB DDR / 200GB HDD / Dual Layer DVD±RW/ Integrated ATI Radeon Xpress 200 / Flash Media Reader / Windows XP Media Center 2005 / Refurbished Desktop PC

I really want a tv tuner though and i was wondering if shows you record can be burned onto dvd?

also i am trying to stay under 600 with shipping included

Ah right, forgot about the tuner, but it's not like you couldn't add one. I added one I had laying around to my compaq(which actually was pulled from an HP :P)

The Sempron is just the cheaper processor from AMD. It's still a strong performer. I got one in my laptop, nice processor. I'd take it any day over Intel's Celeron!

As for those 2 machines you posted, I'm not a huge fan of either of those brands. However, if I had to pick one, I'd go with the emachines due to the RAM and slightly faster CPU.

And yes, if you capture something you can burn it to a DVD.

Are they really different in performance wise though? because im not going to upgrade the memory that much probably only to 2 gigs on either computer plus im on a really tight budget...lol

you said the emachine has a faster cpu but its only 2.2 ghz when the gateway is 2.4?

All in all, those machines are practically identical. if you're going to upgrade the RAM, I guess there's no real difference. I know the onboard video on the emachines is pretty bad, but I'm not sure how it is on the Gateway. I've never really done any research on that chipset...

Um... records show that the Athlon 64 3400 is only 2.2GHz...

thats odd im not saying your wrong but it says this on tiger direct:

Processor Brand AMD

Processor Class Athlon 64

Processor Number 3400

Processor Speed 64 3400+ / 2.40GHz

Additional Technologies HyperTransport Technology

must be a mistake

Try this prebuilt from cyberpowerpc. It gets free shipping. You also get 5% instant cashback, just make sure you type in the promo code on checkout. If you dont like this one, check out their other ones. They are a decent price for what you get. :)

it could be socket 754 athlon64, thus 2.4ghz.

holyjunk125 - Why don't you learn how to type?

Anyway, something went wrong with my last computer. I could never pinpoint it, but I'm aiming towards a processor as everything else was swapped out. Because I didn't want to deal with it anymore, I just gutted it and purchased my compaq.

I am assuming that your price target does not include the monitor, so here goes:

I recently put together this list from Newegg. You might want to spring for an extra stick of RAM. IMHO stick with AMD - you'll get a better bang for the buck. I hope this list helps. You won't get a "great" computer for $500, but it would be a good one.
