512 RAM - 2gb

Hello Everyone,
It's been a little bit since my last post sorry, I had some obligations which prohibited me from coming back nearly right after I joined.

Ok, So I have this new PC that I was issued by the military and as such I have to use it for the next four years. However it is a Dell Precision 370 and the specs on it do not match what I want.

The issue with RAM is that there is currently 512mb (2x256) in 2 outta the four DIMM slots. Now, They don't look like 240 PIN to me but the Dell website says that this computer has 240 PIN. I want to upgrade this to 2 gb (2x1gb) and so I really need to know what I have and also if there are already two 256's in the black slots then if I put the two 1gbs in the white slots then would I have 2.5 gb total RAM? I think the ram is pc3200 right now and that's probably what I'd be getting to upgrade with too.

Thanks.

The RAM you have is DDR2 240-pin, to clear that up. You can get any 240-pin DDR2, but it will run at PC3200. If you did put 2x1gb sticks in the remaining two slots, it would be 2.5gb.

Thanks, in that case would it be smarter to just get 2x512 and have 1.5 gb overall then because the boost from 1.5-2 wouldn't be that much or would 2.5 just be really sweet?

And does that mean I could buy pc2700 and it would run at 3200 or it needs to be 3200 or better?

No, basically, the motherboard is the limiting factor, and its upper limit is PC3200, if you got DDR2 it would only run at PC3200 if you got PC2700 then it would run at PC2700.

alright, in that case it seems like pc3200 ram (2x1gb) is about 150 from newegg and places so I will probably just go with that because I'll gladly shell out 50 more bucks for a whole gig more ram. :D

lol, what are you playing to do w/ that computer? Gaming? Video editing? normal usage?

just gaming and school stuff.

Counter-Strike Source is my most gfxing demanding game right now but then I am getting Star wars Empire at War in a month, can't wait.
And From the looks of the screenies from that game, I need a lot of ram to render all of the fleet things going on. And I still need a new video card... pci-e ... sigh..

im pretty sure those games don't need 2.5gigs of ram to run, probably more video card demanding. NOt positive though.

i think expansive environments makes a game ram intensive... bf2 lagged to all hell with 1gb ram and graphics maxed.. upgrade to 2 and its butter

well if his mobo is designed for DDR, then DDR2 wouldnt even fit since its 240-pin, not 184-pin.

really? i can play bf2 all maxed out w/ a little bit of lag..but not that much. And my friend w/ that graphics card can play it on all high with no problem.

ya i play it fine now, it wasnt the card that was stuttering... it was only after loads. i dunno but another gb of ram cured it
anywho..

make sure you get unbuffered ddr2 3200, because there is a lot of ecc registered ram which you cannot use

ahh... and the dumb Dell site would have me buy ECC registered RAM... those tricky blue devils! Does their treachery know no bounds!
