512MB or 1GB?

Will I need a 512Mb or 1Gb memory for just using the Internet and Powerpoint, and using some more programs. I am getting a new laptop, and I am wondering whether to buy a 1Gb memory module. Also, will 80GB be OK?

I would be grateful if someone could give me some advice on memory.

There's nothing wrong with getting more RAM... However, I run 512MB on my laptop with no swap file and it does fine. 60GB harddrive as well.

Thank you. I was curious, because my last one was really slow, and I just want to make sure I am getting a decent laptop.

More RAM will increase performance, but you should be fine with just 512MB, as long as you dont have too many programs open at once.

Unless you are gaming or are a heavy multi-tasker, 512MB is fine. I have 512MB on my laptop, but do to integrated graphics usually only have 384MB, and I can still open several programs at once, gaming though could be improved with 1GB.

Why do you have so much dedicated to VRAM? It's rather pointless...I know I can't tell a difference between 16M or 128M allocated to video on mine, games or whatever.

Actually for gaming I run it at 64MB (options are 32MB, 64MB, and 128MB). That is actually the flaw with Radeon Xpress 200M, it absolutely cannot handle 128MB worth of VRAM, you *should* see better performance out of 64MB on just about any game. Right now I have 468MB (i think), which seems to work out better for both apps and games. When I first got it though, it was set to 128MB VRAM.
