What would you choose? The 100GB SATA 5400RPM drive, or the 60GB SATA 7200RPM.

The 60GB costs $30 more.

I will be using this for a portable DVD player, general use, and a fair amount of gaming.

bump :)

I know i shouldnt bump so soon, but im ordering this in a few minutes and would like your suggestions.

Its really up in the air. it seems you want more space since you would be going with the 100GB drive if its 5400rpm, so if thats the case then i'd go with the 100gb drive. the 5400rpm is still a pretty good preformer.
but if u really want to, youwill get a noticable speed difference with the 7200rpm drive, but u will be back down to the 60gbs.

It's unfortunate that the 100GB drive is so slow, but if you are going to be watching movies and playing games off this drive, you need have the speed. The only problem is that you will be limited with the 60GB drive, but hopefully you won't need too many movies :).

Agreed. If you werent planning on gaming then i would go with the 5400rpm. But i think the difference between the 5400rprm and 7200rpm will be quite noticable in gaming.

oh crap i voted for the wrong one, instead of the 100gig i wanted to vote for the 60gig....lack of sleep is finally catching up to me..:\

i would get the 60GB 7200 harddrive and then when you get more money or if you have enough left over get a external harddrive so you have more space. i would not get the 5400 its to slow for gaming and alot of other stuff.

I actually ended up getting an 80GB 5400RPM drive.

The difference in seek time between the two are only 1-2ms, and is hardly noticable. The 7200RPM drives also run hotter and use up more battery power.

The 5400 is sorta in the middle, since most other laptops are only 4200RPM.

I appreciate you help, but i was trying to keep the laptop as close as possible to $2,000 since i cant really spend much over that.

I understand your final buy. The battery reason is very true. Tell us how the difference is between a 7200rpm and a 5400rpm.

Many wouldn't see a major difference from a 7200 and 5400 HD as you would from a 4200 to a 5400. But giving up 40gigs is a lot of wanted space? And you have to pay an extra $30 for that handicap?! I think you chose well with an 80gb 5400. So what laptop did you end up buying?

Once i get it i'll let you know :)

And my old laptop was either a 4200RPM or 5400RPM, and it was pretty fast.

Yes it does use a bit more battery, but not that much. I also thought that, but after a few tests, they were pretty much identical. As for heat, it all depends on the brand. A Seagate is significantly cooler than a Hitachi.

What kinda rebate or deal is that where you get 750 dollars off?

check out notebookreview.com they have the section of dell deals, dell ALWAYS runs premotins like that

I found it on some eDeals website. If you spend $1,999 or more you get $750 off, plus free shipping ($50 value).

id say 100gb just because 1. hard drive just effects loading time, not FPS normally... and think about it... unreal tournament 2004 takes up like 5gb. i guess it depends on the games you'll be playing, find out how much space they take up and how much space Vista takes up (if you plan on using it) and then decide how much space you want for music/videos/dvd images
edit: sorry you said portable dvd PLAYER i thought u wanted a portable dvd BURNER lol...
well its still up to you really. id say 40% 60% is pretty close for the amount of people that voted.

That deal you got was pretty incredible....although I guess now laptop prices are falling......but still, $1300 for a laptop with that processor, gpu, ram, dvd burner, etc... and from dell...they usually overcharge for extras like a dvd burner...but the core (basic) systems are pretty cheap.

the system also included a free Dual Core and DVD Burner upgrade.
