56K Modem Working or Not?

So recently one of my friends' laptop had the phone line plugged into it (for the slow internet). Something got struck by lightning and now the internet doesn't work for him. My guess is that phone line got fried, but I'm wondering if there is a way to test the 56K modem on the latop to see if it's still functioning or not.

BTW, his laptop is at my house to be fixed, so I basically only have the laptop's 56K modem to troubleshoot and not his phone line. If I can confirm the modems functionality, then I can say what got fried.

More than likely its fried. Plug a phone line into it and try dialing a number.

I have dial up :0 (hehehe) did the lightning strike at your house or his? if it was at his can't you just check it with your phone line?
