why does 5870 cost twice as much as 5850.
i looked at the numbers and it's not that much better.

price of 1gb 5870 on newegg is $360 - 420
5850 cost 260 - 325
i guess im comparing high priced 5870s to low cost 5850. but somebody spending that kind of cash on a vid card would want the best cooling right? high priced 5870.

Actually depends which cards you are looking at. Because there is a 5870 1gb version and a 5870 2gb version. The 5870 2gb version is a bit more expensive than the other version. I do have the 5870 and i'm all on stock cooling. Everything is running according to it's suggested temperature.

What he said. The 5870 2gb can be over 500. I got my Visiontek 5870 1gb for $350.

Its called marketting. Many mid range cards perform almost (as well as when OCd) than some of the higher end models. Most consumers aren't educated. e.g. the 8800GT was a champ of a card that performed as well as the 8800GTS when OCd, but was much much cheaper at release. Not uncommon.
