5870 opinions

My advice is to wait for Nvidia's new offerings. I recently picked up a 4870 X2, almost didn't because of the PITA drive issues I had with ATI cards in the past. But I must say, the new 9.12 catalyst is WAY better than last time I tried which was 9.9. Atleast, the compatability with windows 7 was the issue, because I had both Nvidia and CCC drivers on there because I swap cards out a lot.

So, although the 5870 is decent, ATI's newest line just barely beats Nvidia's cards that are over a year old already. Once Nvidia releases Fermi, they will dominate for sure. I'm waiting for a GTX360 myself.

Do you know what the price of fermi is going to be?
 
Price's would drop down a bit with Nvidia launching more competition. I've got a 5870 and I love it, flies through crysis at 1920x1080 which is impressive. Game like GTA IV which is very demanding it handles too. I used CCC to bump up the clock speeds to 900/forgot now but the highest.

Wait until fermi comes out, see what those prices look like and compare benchmarks with the 5870.

Also, what I think is possible but I'm not sure. Crossfiring a 5870 with a 5970 to make 3 cards in crossfire. If that's possible who would need another card..

I think it would still work, but sine a 5970 is two 5850's, I would get a 5850 now and then maybe crossfire with a 5970. That way you have three of the same GPU's.

A 5850 is just about as good as a 5870 if you overclock it, for now.

Ah so that is why the bastard is so huge. I heard Fermi line from Nvidia is suppose to be single chip so I am praying its as fast and smaller.

Rate we are going we will have to buy a extra large tower with the bottom cut out so the cards can fit :P
 
The 5970 is the cost of 2 5850s and they are pretty much dead without any overclocking so you could save room if you want to crossfire 2 5850s right away :)

A 5970 beats two crossfired 5850's and would be about the same as crossfired 5870's because the clocks are lower on the X2....just like a 4870 X2 is around the same performance as crossfired 4890's!

Having 2 GPU's on one card is much stronger than crossfire/SLI.
