64 4000+?

Hi,
im looking at building myself a new pc, but im pretty new to it.I did want a dual core, as it is usually years betweem me upgrading my pcs, so i wanted it to last me.

I just wondered if the 4000+ was a good chip to go for?

I have seen one on ebay for £120 GBP, i just wondered if this was a good price for the chip or is there a better one in that price range?

Also, are the any motherboards recommended for the chip?

Thanks
Mike

I'd check out sites like newegg.com; I just bought an Athlon 64 X2 4200+ (socket 939, but AM2 is similar in price) for less than $200 delivered; which is less than 120 pounds. The shipping may be more for you, but I'm guessing an X2 is in your price range.

thank you for the input guys, il definately look at the x2 instead if its recommended.

Mike

You can get a Socket AM2 3800 (Cheapest Athlon dual core) for £101 before postage.

If it's of any interest, Dabs.com have a buy now pay in 9 months scheme available. As long as you spend more than £400, you just have to pay a 10% deposit of toal cost (toal cost includes P&P).

I used this scheme to buy my computer.

P.S. For comparison, Dabs' AM2 3800 is £2 cheaper than scan.co.uk's, so they're not overcharging just for having the scheme.

sorrry if i sound dumb, but id rather ask than make the mistake.

What is the difference between the am2 and the x2, what is the advantage of the x2 over the am2?

Thanks again
Mike

There are 2 differences between the 2:

1)Socket 939 Athlon's use DDR Memory(, the 184-pin variety).
Socket AM2 Athlon's use DDR2 Memory(, the 240-pin variety).

2)AMD's next project (quad-core processors and 2 dual-core CPUs working together) will use the AM2 Socket, so AM2 motherboards are compatible with these upcoming CPU's.

939 pin can support AGP vid cards, am2 only supports pcie vid cards.

I was on a strict budget, so I just ordered a 939 4000+, so I could reuse my 6800gt AGP card. It was $139 shipped from newegg.com.

RAM is also cheaper with 939 pin mobos, since they use ddr vs ddr2. You can pick up 2gb of ddr for about the same price as 1gb of ddr2. I got 2gb for about $120 shipped of ddr pc3200.

939pin mobo's are also a little cheaper, but not really enough to argue about.

AM2 is going to have more upgrade potential in the future, but who knows how long till the next latest/greatest socket will be out and am2 will be outdated... 1yr? 6 months?

Hope that helps...

thanks spillsaw, as i dont tend to upgrade my pcs (i usually leave it till its too old) i think i will go with the x2.

Now just to decide on a mobo.

Thanks

He didnt say 939 and AM2, he said AM2 and X2. X2 is AMDs way of saying dual core, so any CPUs with this will be dual core. AM2 is a socket, and AMD makes AM2 X2 CPUs as well as Socket 939 X2s.

X2 is a line of processor, AM2 is a socket. So you can go with an AM2 X2 processor.

yeah, i meant the s939, i ordered an X2 4200+ last night, so thats the one i decided on, thanks for all of the information on it.
